  • Pick a calm moment to talk, not right after an argument or a difficult discovery
  • Come from a place of concern, not blame
  • Use “I” statements like “I’ve been worried about you” instead of “You’ve been acting different”
  • Ask questions that require more than a yes or no answer
  • Listen more than you talk
  • Don’t bring everything up at once
  • If they shut down or get angry, give them space and try again later

For most families, getting professional help for their child starts with a screening and assessment. During this process, a substance abuse counselor will meet with your teen to:

  • Get a better understanding of their substance use history
  • Ask about their mental and emotional health
  • Learn about their home life, school, and social environment
